Canopeo is a rapid and accurate tool used for measuring green canopy cover. This app allows users to quantify the percentage of canopy cover of live green vegetation in various agricultural, turf, or grassland settings by analyzing downward-facing photos captured with a mobile device.

Instead of relying on traditional visual scoring methods or costly desktop programs, Canopeo offers a powerful and convenient quantitative solution. Developed based on research from Oklahoma State University, this tool enables real-time calculation of canopy cover percentage, facilitating precise monitoring of crop development and informed decision-making in management practices.

Potential applications of Canopeo encompass quantifying canopy cover in small grains and row crops, assessing crop damage caused by factors such as freeze, hail, or herbicide, and evaluating turf grass stands.

With Canopeo, users can annotate each image, upload them to their accounts, and effortlessly access this information for review or sharing purposes at any time from their office or home. The app automatically logs the geographic coordinates and current date and time for each image, ensuring accurate tracking of when and where the photos were taken. Additionally, existing images in the device's photo library can be utilized within Canopeo to compute the percentage of canopy cover.

STEPS TO USE CANOPEO

1. Download the Canopeo App and set up your account.
2. Capture a downward-facing photo of the vegetative canopy with your mobile device. For optimal results, maintain a distance of at least 0.6 meters (2 feet) from the top of the canopy.
3. In the subsequent screen, compare the color image with the processed image to ensure accurate identification of green pixels by the default settings. Green pixels in the original image should align with white pixels in the processed image. Use the adjustment slider if needed to correct any discrepancies – generally, default settings provide precise canopy cover estimates.
4. Incorporate notes related to the image, such as crop type, planting date, vegetation height, among others, before uploading both images and associated data to your personalized account.
5. Access your account through a web browser to review images, search for specific images, or visualize all images on a map.
